ABOUT

Los Angeles-based painter Kate Muehlemann-Cataldo incorporates themes of care into figurative painting informed by work as a hospice nurse and death doula. Working primarily in oil and watercolor, her practice is influenced by the vulnerability and empathy cultivated in caregiving, and themes of queer identity.

Muehlemann-Cataldo studied portraiture and figure painting at The Art Student’s League of New York with Sharon Sprung, and watercolor and digital painting at The New York Academy of Art with Marcelo Daldoce.  Kate completed a residency and critical feedback program at Trestle Gallery, in Brooklyn, NY, and most recently participated in the NYC Crit Club Visiting Critic Program with Clarity Haynes.

Select exhibition venues include Van Der Plas Gallery, SoMad Gallery New York City; Slushbox Gallery, West Palm Beach, FL; Trestle Gallery, 440 Gallery, La Bodega Gallery, Brooklyn, NY.

STATEMENT

Kate Muehlemann-Cataldo creates portrait and figurative paintings that convey an intimacy and knowing of their subject.  Muehlemann-Cataldo's paintings are informed by their work as a nurse and aim to examine the trust and vulnerability they have found while caring for patients.  Her models range from hospice patients, her spouse, and to the broader queer community.  Models are often depicted in their home environments, while often in positions of rest and repose.

The Constellation’s Project is a queer, intergenerational, art and storytelling project that documents the stories of queer elders through oral histories and portraiture.  Queer youth are engaged through listening to the recorded stories and making art in response to elements that inspire them for their own future.  The project uses art as a vehicle for deeper connection in the queer community, to address issues of LGBTQ+ aging and caregiving.
